#Kmer_Ai : Our next Live Event comming up on Table Representation Learning using Heterogeneous Graph Embedding: https://www.youtube.com/wa...

Date: Sartuday 27 July 2024, Time: 19h (GMT+1)

Host: KmerAI represented by Tassé Geraud
Guest: Willy Carlos Tchuitcheu, PhD student

Event Details:

About the Guest:
Willy Carlos Tchuitcheu is a PhD student at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, working in the Mathematics and Data Science lab under the supervision of Dr. Tan Lu and Professor Ann Dooms. His research areas include: Graph ML, NLP and Joint Visual Language modeling.

Topic: Table Representation Learning using Heterogeneous Graph Embedding

Willy will discuss the challenges of extracting semantic information from tables with complex layouts and will introduce a new framework called Graph-based Table Representation Learning (GTRL). GTRL combines graph-based visual modeling with sequence-based language modeling to learn detailed per-cell embeddings that capture the semantic meaning within the table context. Empirical evaluations on two datasets will show that GTRL achieves competitive performance whilst requiring reduced computational complexity compared to existing table representation models.

Tourism in Cameroon! 🇨🇲
The #Foumban Palace is one of the most visited places here is why the Foumban prestigious cultural palace outstands as one of the best palaces in Cameroon when it comes to cultural tourism in the country.
The palace still has in place its preserved values, and cultural dignity till date. Most tourist do travel to Cameroon just to visit the Foumban palace. The palace is located about 200kilomatres from the capital city of the west region, Bafoussam. Different types of crafts could be found in this palace. Most of them are quite old and attractive, reasons why tourists love visiting there. The entrance of the palace has been beautified with beautiful statuses of different animals such as elephants, tigers, lions, etc. These statuses represent the history of the people of Foumban. Many other crafts could be found in the palace Meseum, it is such an amazing place to visit, they have got almost everything relating to the culture of their people in this Meseum (CRTV 2010.)

The Foumban palace has a long history of welcoming tourists, due to its generational regards the indigenes have for their culture and craft. The sultan of Foumban, his Royal Majesty Njoya, has always been making it a culture for his subjects to always have an annual cultural festival where their cultural values could be show-cased. This in return attracts more and more tourists all over the world. The Foumban palace arena has one of the most beautiful museums in Cameroon. In this museum one will find beautiful crafts and very old statuses that have been for generations. According to the prince of Foumban on a recent interview on the national television, he made it known that, a people without their ancestral and cultural values really cannot say they have a culture, reason why they have been protecting theirs for generation after generation. He added, he is perhaps the 4th generation prince of the Foumban palace, but the statuses of his forefathers could still be found in the palace, whereas that of other palaces have been sold to researchers (Njoya 2020.)

In his welcome address, Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo, Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education, praised the profile of his guest. The latter is the first to hold a doctorate in Sociology from the Joseph Ki-Zerbo University of Ouagadougou. His work in the field also inspired admiration, as well as his mastery of the scientific and administrative spheres. The Minister of State expressed his gratitude to Prof. Fabien NKOT, Head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Yaounde II, who led this intellectual and political eminence within MINESUP's premises.
In response, Dr Zakaria SORE, Secretary General at the Presidency of Burkina Faso, expressed his wish to learn from Cameroon's University experience. In the same vein, he pointed out that a significant number of Burkinabe have been trained in Cameroon. Indeed, he revealed that 60% of demographers in Burkina Faso were trained in our country, notably at the Institute for Demographic Training and Research (IFORD) of the University of Yaounde II. It is therefore an opportunity for him to draw inspiration from Cameroon's higher education system to develop that of the Land of Upright People, but also to envisage collaboration between the Universities of the two States. He further explains by saying: “I am here to pave the way between Cameroonian higher education and higher education of Burkina Faso”.
At the end of this audience, which focused on sharing experiences, the Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education, assured his Burkinabe guest that the areas of collaboration between the two university systems would be set out in a memorandum that he will submit to his superiors as soon as he returns to Burkina Faso.

CAMEROONIAN ABDON ATANGANA RANKED WORLD'S BEST MATHEMATICIAN 🇨🇲🇨🇲🏆

"I realized that most theorem are named after people from the global North. I did research and realized there's no African attached to mathematical formula. I was motivated to have my name attached to mathematical formula ". - Abdon Atangana.

38 year-old Cameroonian Prof. Abdon Atangana, a professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of the Free State (UFS) South Africa, is ranked number one in applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and statistics in the world, and number 260 in all of science, technology, and engineering in the Stanford University World’s Top 2% Scientists list.

➡️In 2006, he came out with an idea of a fractional derivative using the mittag leffler function. He created differential equations to model the interaction of species in real world.
His scholarly work is ***** led "Fractional Stochastic Differential Equations".

➡️In 2019, Abdon Atangana was ranked by Stanford University as the second best mathematician in the world, among the top 2% of scientists in the world.

➡️In June 2023, the 37-year-old mathematician was awarded the first Unesco-AI Fozan International Prize for the Promotion of Young Scientists in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

#DidYouKnow that Yvonne Darlene Cagle has been the only African American female astronaut who served in the military?

Cagle was born on April 24, 1959, in West Point, New York. On July 20, 1969, she watched with her family as Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. This inspired her to leave her footprints on the moon one day. Her family later moved to Novato, California, where she attended Navato High School.

In 1977, she graduated and enrolled in San Francisco State University in San Francisco, California. In 1981, she graduated and was sponsored to attend medical school through the U.S. Air Force’s Health Professions Scholarship Program. In 1985, Cagle received her Doctorate in medicine and was commissioned as an officer in the Air Force.

In 1988, she became a certified flight surgeon from the School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks Air Force Base in Texas. She was assigned to the 48th Tactical Hospital in the United Kingdom, where she logged numerous hours in a variety of aircrafts, providing medical support.

In May 1989, Cagle volunteered to serve as the Air Force medical liaison officer for the STS-30 Atlantis shuttle mission test. She provided contributed to ongoing studies on astronaut health and served as a consultant for ******* e telemedicine.

On May 1, 1996, Cagle was selected astronaut candidate. Though she was never selected for any ******* e missions, she designed medical protocols for astronauts in ******* e that are still followed today.

In 2008, #Cagle retired from the Air Force with the rank of Colonel. Though she never achieved her dream of reaching the moon, Cagle is still active with NASA and serves as their lead scientists on the Commercial Reusable Suborbital Research program.

Join us daily until April 8, to learn about the members of the #Afronauts (the affinity group of African American astronauts) who also served in the military and some safety tips to enjoy the upcoming eclipse.

George Washington Carver had a difficult start in life. Born sometime around 1864, his father died shortly before George's birth, likely from an accident when he was out hauling wood. And only weeks after birth, slave traders kidnapped George and his mother. Rescued would not be an apt term; recovered is more appropriate. But the group sent out to find him and his mother exchanged a horse for the young boy. His mother, however, was lost to the traders. Less than two months old, and George was already an orphan.

Often sick, frail, he was not expected to live. But live he did, and from a young age, he showed much devotion to work and a desire for learning. He was curious, and as he'd roam the woods near the Carver home, exploring flowers, trees, rocks, and birds, he began asking questions about their purpose.

While much of his education early on was self-motivated, he began formal schooling at ten. He learned of a school about eight miles from the Carver home. And without any money or a new home, he left the Carver's to attend this school, living in an old barn while doing odd jobs to earn money to survive. Eventually, he was adopted into a family there.

Education for George would continue through completing a Master's Degree in agriculture from Iowa State University in 1896. After which, he took a job as Head of the Agricultural Department at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.

As an agricultural scientist and inventor, his goal was to help farmers improve their lives by earning more from their crops. He found hundreds of uses through his research of peanuts in particular and other products such as sweet potatoes and pecans. His work was instrumental and impactful. Between 1915 and 1918, acreage for peanut cultivation grew from half a million to over four million acres.

After George passed away in 1943, Franklin D. Roosevelt sent a message that said: "All mankind are the beneficiaries of his discoveries in the field of agricultural chemistry. The things which he achieved in the face of early handicaps will for all time afford an inspiring example to youth everywhere."
