🇨🇲😤🙏🏾MBAMI MODESTE Olympic Games tribute:
On September 23rd 2000, over 37300 spectators crammed into the Cricket Ground to watch Cameroon with Brazil for a ticket to the semis of Men's Football at the Sydney Olympic Games.
The fine weather and flawless turf in Brisbane made for a pristine condition, while back home in Cameroon time stood still and the streets were filled with a hubbub of noise for it was a day like no other.
Twenty-five minutes in, M'boma cast the first ray of light across the land with a beautiful freekick that got the better of Helton from 25 metres out. The Lions then had two players sent off, and with 9 men, they seemed to be on a sinking ship with no lifeboat; then in the 94th minute, a certain Ronaldinho 'gaucho' in the Brazilian ranks gave Kameni a gusto of his Samba sauce with a majestic free-kick goal to level scores, and drag the game into extra time.
Those were the days of the sudden death or golden goal. The Indomitable Lions were stretched repeatedly. However, instead of condensing, they became diamonds. Among them, an 18-year-old would flicker and produce the glow in the Brisbane night, slamming home a staggering shot from 18 metres out to seal a 2-1 win for Cameroon . That 18-year-old was Mbami Modeste.
He whipped his shirt off, spinning it in circles above his head, while darting across the pitch in jollification. Cameroon had beaten the favourites and was in the semis.
That teenager with the golden braids, that goal, that celebration, that evening in Brisbane have today gelled to forever be a star peeking through the clouds and winking at us in glory.
Mbami Modeste will always be talked about in Cameroon football history.
Rest in Heaven, crack!
