#WilberforceUniversity was founded in 1856 and was the first black college owned and operated by African Americans. It was named after #WilliamWilberforce , the great British abolitionist, to educate blacks from the South. The first president was AME Bishop #DanielPayne . President William S. Scarborough was considered the first African-American classicist and held that position from 1908-1920. The photo at the top is of the partial faculty & administration c. 1900s.
